Nova's Correspondence Quilt

a journey

Prolific sewist and modern quilter Nova Flitter (great name!) recently blogged about the "correspondence quilt" she has been working on in collaboration with her mother.

Nova, who lives in Australia, and her mom, who lives in the UK, have been sticking small scraps of red & white fabrics into their letters to one another over the past several months. In addition, they've been working on small redwork pieces representing the special things they love and have special or personal meaning to them.

The embroidered pieces and the shared fabrics have become this amazing patchwork quilt top, patiently awaiting its final sashing pieces before being carefully & lovingly hand-quilted.

What a beautiful and meaningful piece of art, sure to become a family heirloom. Thanks for sharing your story, Nova!

  2. What a beautiful lovely piece. A true treasure. I am very glad this blog finally featured some redwork. However, when you say "'painstakingly handquilted", which coming from someone who does embroidery, is sounds pretty uninformed. Hand quilting is speedy and simple compared to embroidery. Think of the stitch count. All the embroidery on that gorgeous quilt will have taken so much more time than the quilting to complete it. Using the word "painstaking" will put people off without even trying it.

  6. Wow! I love this idea. But my mom doesn't sew! I may have to do something like this just for her from me! I can't wait to see this all done. I am sure that the hand quilting will take awhile to do also. Thanks for sharing this!

  7. Heather, thanks for your comment! I can see your point -- "painstakingly" may not have been the best word choice. I meant it more in the sense of carefully and lovingly. I'll probably go update the post now.

    I appreciate your feedback!

  10. I would love to do something like this but I fear it would be a one-person project as I don't know anyone who shares my interests in this - not that that's an entirely bad thing! Would make a lovely gift, maybe as a landmark birthday present or an anniversary gift for someone with an embroidered patch for each year? Although the 50s and over might cause considerable damage to your hands... :s
