Pins and Needles Giveway

iamge_4 iamge_2

A good craft store is really hard to find. I learned this particularly when I lived in New York and had to take a long, long, long, subway ride from Manhattan to Queens just to be able to buy felt, needles, and embroidery hoops.

So I was fascinated when Jenn emailed me about Pins and Needles NYC, a bright, beautiful storefront dedicated to fabrics, haberdashery, and classes in sewing, quilting and embroidery. Their blog is also full of lovely projects and tutorials.

Well, I was even more thrilled when I heard that they wanted to do a giveaway on Feeling Stitchy, to round out our birthday month of giveaways and festivities!

win fabric and floss

In the giveaway for today are 1/2 yard each of the 2 Anna Maria Horner fabrics above, and 12 skeins of floss in the recently released Anna Maria Horner colors for Anchor floss. The fabrics have a gorgeous cross stitch print that would look beautiful stitched over, or simply left as is.

And the floss colors are pretty much my favorites shades of everything:

floss

  1. Hello! This is a lovely giveaway: thanks Pins and Needles, and to you guys for hosting it! I think the farthest I've gone is baaacckk in tiiimmmee for my crafting supplies ;) I enjoy using vintage bits in my embroidery. I guess in real life I've traveled up to an hour to go to shops I've liked, one of the sweet and sour parts of living within an hour of my entire life.

  3. I live in rural Missouri and so I have to drive into the city to find any decent craft store. I routinely drive 40 miles or more to hit my favorite fabric stores so I have to be sure it's going to be worth it. (PS. It usually is.:D )

  10. I can find some supplies within 10 miles of my home but my favorite fabric shop is about an hour and 45minutes away so I try to visit once a month. I always find just what I need and I make a list all month so that I don't forget anything.

  11. What a beautiful shop! I must get the Anne Marie floss! Its gorgeous!
Being in the city I have plenty of craft shops nearby. My favorite is on the other side of the city...they carry a fantastic collection of designer fabrics and I just can't stay away :)

  15. When I used to be able to travel interstate before kids I would stay in the city & make a note of decent stash stores to visit. I was out of the city & at their door before opening time one morning. I think it was about 45 mins on the train! I'd go further if I had the chance to visit a great store!

  16. Those AMH floss colors are gorgeous!! Well, I live in the suburbs in the south bay, about 45 minutes south of San Francisco so we have lots of stores to choose from. However, I'd have to say that the farthest I've ever traveled to get supplies was flying to London so that I could visit the Button Queen shop for vintage buttons. (That wasn't the only reason for going but it was the one that I concentrated on.)

And the next farthest would be about 3 hours down the road to Morro Bay to visit a little shop that sells vintage ribbons and millinery supplies.

  18. While I don't HAVE to travel all that far for my crafting supplies, I always check out the specialty shops where ever I travel -- One of the best was the Drogerie in Strasbourg, France.

  19. What a lovely giveaway! When I lived in the dorms in college, I'd have to take three buses to get to the craft store. But it was worth it - plus there was a great mexican restaurant next door to the craftstore! Heh.

  20. Wow! What an awesome giveaway! Love the floss. When my grandaughter was born, my son and his wife lived in West Middlesex,PA. While i was visiting, I was working on the dress for Elana's baby dedication. I found myself short of the lace I was using and drove about 45 miles into Ohio to a store that had it. I only needed about 2 yards of lace. It was worth it. The dress was beautiful!

Have been doing mostly quilting in past 25+ yrs, along with some cross-stitch, embroidery, knitting and crotch. Getting into doing more embroidery so would love to win. I will travel great distances to get to supplies and if all else fails..shop online.

  37. What a dreamy store and lovely giveaway! How far have I gone for supplies? Well, I never make a trip on purpose, I just pick things up everywhere I go. This includes flying to my sister's in Arizona. I came back to Wisconsin with oodles of beads and thread!

  38. So pretty, it's so nice when you find a local spot to get your supplies

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well... back when I was working in an office, I was sent to South Bend, Indiana for a conference (I live in Southern California). One of the locals kindly took us to her favorite needlework supply store during a lunch break, and I came home with a suitcase full of needles and floss, not to mention the fabric I bought at a mall where I had to shop for replacement clothes when my luggage was delayed.

So, So Cal to Indiana is the farthest I've gone for supplies.

  40. In my state I have gone as far as 200 miles to find crafting supplies. When I have traveled, I have gone as far as 1000 miles to find crafting supplies.

  41. What a great giveaway! I have to admit I haven't gone too far to just get crafting supplies, though I've bought art pens in Germany, does that suffice?

    ReplyDelete
  42. How fun! I have been making all too frequent stops at a couple of local fabric stores to check out their remnant bins to find interesting bits to embroider on. I score maybe 1 out of 5 trips. Perhaps this is less extreme and more obsessive, though!

  43. I live in California and my husband took me with him to new York. I made a list of all craft & bookstores I wanted to see. Because he is so urban, we rode the subways and walked...purl soho, tinsel trading, I would have asked him to take me to pins and needles!!!

  46. What a beautiful store! The next time I'm in NYC... I've been posted overseas for my job a few times, so I've done the ordering online in the states to have goodies come thousands and thousands of miles to me in Africa. Or made treks to stores before shipping out to make sure i have a good supply. OR...better still...taking in the best of local markets. Fabric shopping in Africa is the best.

  47. Thanks for the giveaway! I have traveled to NY many times just to go shopping for my sewing needs! Now that I know Pins and Needles is there too, I will definately add them to my list of stops!

  50. Gorgeous!!! I want to try out Anchor floss, I've only used DMC because it's so easy to get a hold of. I actually have gone from California to Pennsylvania for Appleton Crewel floss. Of course, I was there for another reason, but I really wanted to see the colors in person and I couldn't find a place close to me in CA. The floss is amazing.

  51. A fes years agoe we were in Denmark with some friends during New Year. I wanted to visit a yarn shop in another little village and the bf and I took the direct route displayed on a map. A really old map as it turns out. Yes, there was a none-paved street and others used it too. But the whole area was military and only open sometimes and there were huge bumps in the street and fake houses on the side...totally eerie!

  52. I have a craft store nearby that is very useful! When I lived in a more rural area I'd have to drive an hour and a half to get supplies though, and there weren't many choices! I love the fabric in this giveaway, thanks for giving us the chance to have it ;)

  55. I have a box that is bursting full of silks. It is a mixture of silks that I bought plus silks hat have been donated.

  56. I got my embroidery inspiration from my aunt, whom I lived with when I went on a road trip to Malaysia (p.s. I live in Singapore). It was 10 hours long! She passed down all her handicraft and embroidery floss to me, which started my obsession!

  57. What a lovely giveaway! I never submit for these things, but this one I have to because I have traveled quite far for my happy addiction. The furthest I've traveled just for the sake of some stash was to Argentina. A couple of years ago I decided that a trip to Buenos Aires to do some tango and shoe shopping would be fun, I went, I danced, I shopped, but I had no idea there was such wonderful yarn to be had....until I came home to Seattle when a client asked if I'd visited the famed yarn boutiques in Buenos Aires. I hadn't and was ashamed! So I went home that night and planed another trip for 6 months later!!! Seriously, I brought back 3 large bags filled with the most sumptuous yarns! I'm still working through most of it but delight in the pleasure of having it to reminisce about how I traveled so far just for some yarn.

  58. Not as far as a lot of people here, but there's a nice patchwork shop in the Peak District here in the UK that I wish I went to more often which is about 50 miles away. I'm 100 miles from London and I like a certain vintage linen shop there. There are no shops near me that sells many designer fabrics, just a few bolts here and there and they're at least $20 a yard. I love shopping from the US online now!

I won't spend all that money on petrol only to find that there's nothing in my price class or anything I want.

  99. I wasn’t the one who had to go far out of my way, it was my boyfriend. While in hospital feeling sorry for myself and embroidering, I decided I needed a particular shade of pale green. My boyfriend agreed to travel across the city to the nearest John Lewis and take photos for me of each pale green. He’d get so exasperated after he sent a picture and I’d text back “It needs more turquoise in it..” Maybe this kit could have saved him a trip.

The department store there had embroidery floss and lots of Japanese books, so I had lots of that kind of crafty stuff. I even taught myself to crochet dollies and things like that. I had just gotten into making quilts then and there was no place to buy batting, so I contacted a quilt shop in California and they sent me a roll of it. Because Customs didn't know what it was it ended up costing a fortune to get it ~ fortunately my husband was willing to get it and it made me really happy.

  108. I'm from a rural area, and the nearest craft stores are about an hour and a half away. I can't even get yarn or embroidery floss anywhere here! It's fun to make a day of it, though, and hit up all my favorites at once (plus bookstores and Target, of course) :)

  115. this is such a lovely give away!

i have to say, though, that I haven't gone too far to buy craft supplies... since I'm a newbie, the supplies on my local stores (I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina) are enough for now... I did get some fabric from the US online, but guess that it doesn't count.

  116. I live in SF, but I always shop for crafts when I visit Manhattan. I especially stock up on scrapbooking paper and ribbon. I used to live on the UWS and I miss my favorite shops! I will have to check out Pins and Needles next time!

  117. What a fun giveaway! Anna Maria is one of my favorite artists.

We lived in Greece for 6 years and while they had many stores with various sewing items it was incredibly difficult to find DMC and cotton fabrics so I had to contact family in the U.S. and then anxiously wait on "pins and needles" for things to arrive... that would take anywhere from one to four months!

  118. Oh how lovely. I am lucky to have wonderful sewing shops close by, but always look out for stitching bounty when on holiday. I have some silk loss from Spain and course weave cotton from Jamaica :-)

  122. What a fun giveaway! Great blog, too. As for the question, I have a confession: I don't typically go to craft stores. I am such a newbie that I have found it better to experiment on thrift store finds. Some day I'm going to be confident enough to get the really good stuff, but for now, I use what others don't want any more.

  130. I have twice been on a tour of the local yarn shops (the farthest shop was about 100 miles from where I lived). If I find a good crafting shop, I like to go back to it and help keep it in business, no matter how far away it is! but when I really need something quick, I just go to the closest place that has what I need.

  132. I haven't traveled too far but my favorite craft trip was when I was in Berkeley on a business trip. After training was adjourned for the day I took BART through the city to Lacis and picked up some fantastic books on Chinese and Japanese embroidery. I would say I'm opportunistic when it comes to craft stores. If I'm in a new place, I figure out where they are and normally visit them right away. Kind of like a magpie; craft supplies are my shiny things and I grab them when possible. I'm sure that describes every crafter, hah.

  137. I haven't traveled far for craft supplies. I try to make a list of items I need and keep it in my purse, just in case I happen to drive near a craft store or thrift store. If I can't find what I'm looking for I shop online.

  138. Nice giveaway pkg!! Thanks! Since I live in a remote northern community in Ontario Canada (north of Lake Superior) I always need to travel to get craft supplies and it could be a 5 hour drive... so I don't appreciate it when my DH tells me that I only have half an hour because we have a ton of other things to run around for!! Sheesh!

  140. I think the farthest I've been in person to get crafting supplies was a couple of states over, but being in the Western US, that can be quite a long way to go. :D Thankfully the internet enables my buying of things like a vintage, reconditioned and totally gorgeous Featherweight from England, sheeps fleece from the Netherlands, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand, embroidery flosses from Japan, pretty beads from SE Asia, etc etc. But I'm always glad to see crafting shops opening in my local area and do my best to shop their first. I'm excited to go explore Pins and Needles NYC through their blog!

  141. Oh the floss colors are pretty and the fabrics would be nice to embroider on.

  144. Eeee! The furthest I've ever gone has involved an hours train ride, then 2 hours on the underground then a three mile walk. The place was the best sewing shop in London while I was there for uni, I wouldn't go anywhere else. Now I'm... *luckier*, it only takes me an hour.

  168. What a lovely store! I wish I could visit it! Well, I've mail ordered items from craft stores in other countries and paid embarrassingly large amounts for shipping. I've traveled as far as 200 miles to visit a craft or fabric store. Nuts! But there it is!

Thanks for the giveaway! You'll make someone extremely happy!

  169. OOOOOOhhhhh! What a great giveaway from such an awesome store.

I live in the middle of NYS and have only chain craft stores nearby. A couple of years ago, I drove all the way to Philadelphia to buy a specifc set of metalsmithing stamps that I really wanted, I knew the vendor would be at Beadfest so I drove 8 hours round trip to get the stamps. They are my favorite set, so it was worth it :)

  170. I've gone all over the country for crafts supplies. One of the first things I do whenever I travel is pull out the Yellow Pages and look under "needlecraft," "fabric," "quilting," and "beads." Then I plot how many of the stores I can visit.

I found out about Pins and Needles a couple of weeks ago, and I can't wait for a free afternoon to visit!

  176. I buy my supplies from all over the world, but the furthest I have ever gone physically is from London (where I live) -> Miami (where I was on holiday) -> Fort Lauderdale where I drove purely to go to a needlework shop that I had found online. And then I spent all my holiday money pretty much in one go! :)

But this giveaway wouldn't get lost in the mix. It's all so lovely!
