About this month

weaving

Hello friends, my hands have been busy this month, just not necessarily with embroidery. Earlier this month I happened upon weaving when trying to come up with a craft for teens when helping my sister with Vacation Bible School.

It was a fortuitous discovery, as I had a death in my extended family- we lost my aunt, and spending time with my huge family from Texas and Mexico was wonderful and overwhelming. I took my rudimentary weaving with me and it helped calm me.

That same weekend, the shooting in El Paso occurred- Texas is big, but anything that happens on the border or in my state feels close to home. My heart had been heavy for some time with what was happening at the border, the detained families and children.

The pain of the shooting in El Paso flooded my heart with sadness. Texas is my home. I am Mexican American. This man wasn't killing indiscriminately. This man was hunting people who looked like me and my family.

Posting anything this month, just didn't feel right. I had one scheduled post, featuring Tamar, and I left it at that. I've spent the rest of this month praying, thinking, and mourning. And weaving. It has been calming and therapeutic in a time where everything feels so unhinged.

I know there is hope, and I know we as a country can do better. But this month, I am quiet, at a loss for words, and deep in thought.

I grew up in my father's church, a small one room sanctuary with a handful of wooden pews, with everything sung and spoken in Spanish.

The last video is a song I remember from that time, sung at my aunt's funeral - the piano is played by my cousin and the lovely soprano you can hear is my mom's voice:

"Maravilloso es, maravilloso es, cuando pienso que Dios me ama a mi."
"How marvelous it is, how marvelous it is, when I think of how God loves me."

Listening to this song has provided me with comfort and healing in these confusing times.

I hope to resume my Project a Month posts next month.

Wonderful Wednesday #75: Emma Jones

Here's a bit of embroidered English Paper Piecing, courtesy of Emma Jones or Vintage Sewing Box, as she is known on her blog and on Instagram @vintagesewingbox. Isn't her work gorgeous? I love the floral fabrics and lovely colors she chooses for her EPP projects.

I love that Emma makes use of every scrap of her fabric, no matter how small... like this teeny, tiny hexy pincushion!!!

Another day, another scrappy hexagon project! Today I’m joining Larisa @stitchingnotes and Lauren @mollyandmama for the weekly #sipteaandepp party. Last week was one of my favourite topics, embroidery and epp, and this week is another of my favourite topics, hexies! I have a lot of hexie projects on the go at the moment. This one is my smallest yet, quarter inch hexies, and it’s going to be a tiny pincushion to take out and about for epp projects. I love how it’s even possible to fussy cut tiny hexies, swipe to see. I join my hexies by using a whip stitch, I haven’t tried any other techniques so I’m looking forward to reading everyone’s tips today. Have you tried quarter inch hexies? #englishpaperpiecing #epp #eppaddict #hexies #hexielove #sewmuchfun #handstitched #tinystitches #slowstitching #quiltersofinstagram #patchwork #tinyfloralsanonymous #creativehappylife #createeveryday #makersgonnamake #aurifil #tinyhexies #scrappyproject #iquilt

Swipe to see just one of the teeny tiny hexagons sitting on her fingertip!

When your trainers match your quilt... I think my Liberty obsession is going too far... I’m joining @stitchingnotes and @mollyandmama this morning for #sipteaandepp and I’m working on my large hexagon Liberty quilt and thinking about how I’m going to join the flowers. I’m using 1 and a half inch hexagons and I love how fast it is growing. This week’s topic is storage. I don’t have any fancy storage systems for epp, I typically use a little box to carry everything in or this lovely case that Heidi @bessaboostudio made for me which is perfect for taking everywhere I go and it makes me so happy. Looking forward to seeing everyone else’s projects and storage. Have a great day everyone #epp #eppeverywhere #quiltersofinstagram #hexies #hexielove #libertylove #golaclassics #patchwork #hexagonquilt #slowstitching #createeveryday #sewmuchfun #sewingastherapy #grandmothersflowergardenquilt

Scrappy Cross Stitch project by Laura Lupin Howard of Bugs and Fishes

scrappy cross stitch project by Laura Lupin Howard as featured on Feeling Stitchy

I am fascinated by this wonderful Scrappy Cross Stitch project by Laura Lupin Howard on Instagram (@lauralupinhoward)! Laura managed to find a use for all those tiny bits of embroidery floss left over when she was stitching:

It's such a creative way to use up every last bit of thread, and it is so wonderfully done! For more on her process, including a plan of her design, visit her blog post: Creating Patchwork Cross Stitch from Leftover Embroidery Threads.

She recently finished a similar concept with a blanket, using colorful yarn scraps as well:

Feeling Stitchy this year? Giveaway!

SeptemberHouse calendar progress
Progress on my Project a Month feature

I've been giving a lot of thought to what I would like to do on Feeling Stitchy this year. Last year, cancer and chemotherapy slowed my schedule, but I realized, not in a bad way. Everything I've been through made me re-evaluate the direction of all my time, including this blog.

As you know, I volunteer my time here, along with our other volunteer bloggers, and aside from receiving free items, Amazon Associates credits, or books for review, I am not paid for any of the writing and crafting I do.

Removing our Facebook Page
Evaluating the focus of my time helped me decide to delete our Facebook Feeling Stitchy page - mainly because I was deleting my personal FB account, but also because I want to cut back on our social presence so that the areas where we are present, can be a richer, more community-filled experience.

Shifting Focus to Instagram
I've been very inspired by the wonderful community on Instagram, and as Flickr goes to a paid format this year, (there are few of you who may remember we began our crafting community on Flickr) I'd like to shift our focus to Instagram rather than Flickr or Facebook.

I've decided that the best thing about Feeling Stitchy all along, and what I most want to promote, is our shared community as stitchers. This year, I want to slow my focus, and work on projects that engage me, and hopefully all of you as well.

In the past, I did features like "Wonderful Wednesday" at a fast pace - featuring a different Etsy shop or pattern every week at times. What was missing was my own stitching element, as I rarely had time to stitch the patterns I featured.

Project a Month Feature
My new feature for the year will be called Project a Month, and in it I will feature a pattern from an Etsy shop or online store, and share my stitching experience with you. I want to engage with the seller and each pattern in a more in-depth way, my main goal is to explore what sets this pattern and shop apart, and to encourage and promote small business designers who work on Etsy and elsewhere.

I'd love for you to stitch along with me but that's not required! In the end, if I inspire you to stitch, buy from a small business, leave a comment, or just get inspired period, I'll have done what I set out to do.

Thinking Small vs. Big
My main goal this year is this idea of thinking SMALL instead of big. In my hometown, we have very few craft and yarn stores left, and we are down to 2 bookstores that sell new books, and very few used bookstores as well.

So this year, another goal of mine is to think small - to try my best to buy items in person rather than online- if I can, I'll buy at a small business, local business, or a local store. I'd also like to buy more patterns from small businesses with Etsy shops or online stores. This year, I'd really like to explore this idea of thinking small, as a way to enrich our communities.

Giveaway!
Okay, now for the giveaway! Please leave feedback on this post on any of the things I mentioned above, and tell me what you would like to see on Feeling Stitchy this year? Is there a book, pattern, or seller you'd like us to feature?

The winner of this giveaway will receive the craft or embroidery-themed book of their choice on Amazon OR the Etsy pattern of their choice - you choose!

Please tell me in the comments which prize you would prefer, and what Amazon book or Etsy pattern you would like as your prize! Leave a comment on this post by February 7, 2019, when I will choose 1 random winner.

Final post: the Twelve Days of Christmas

Finished 12 Days of Christmas ornaments - pattern by Mmmcrafts, as stitched by floresita and shared on Feeling Stitchy

It took me long enough, but I couldn't help sharing one final photo of all of my completed ornaments!

What took me so long? Just that I am a recovering perfectionist... :)

Finished 12 Days of Christmas ornaments - pattern by Mmmcrafts, as stitched by floresita and shared on Feeling Stitchy

I love the phrase "recovering perfectionist" because it describes my crafting nature perfectly (pun intended). :) I waited for days to get good light (artificial light just isn't the same). I moved each ornament around, futzed with little gold hanging strings (which would always tangle and bend the wrong way. In the end, I was NEVER HAPPY, I just had to suck it up and post a photo.

As luck would have it, I just happened to post the photo to our Instagram page on the actual 12th Day of Christmas, yesterday. :) It occurred to me that I had never known when the days of Christmas really are - my Google search confirmed that they actually begin on the 25th and continue through Jan 6, celebrated by some as the Feast of the Epiphany.

I really like this idea - because I don't know about you, but I always have this uncomfortable feeling of loss the day after Christmas - that strange time between Christmas and early January, I always want to continue to be filled with Christmas joy, so I leave my tree up - this year I even left my opened gifts under the tree, so I could see them and be thankful. I mailed late Christmas cards, because, chemo, but I enjoyed extending my observance of the holiday season. I think I'll use this definition of the days of Christmas from now on, to celebrate and appreciate the season more deeply.

I wanted to thank everyone who has sent me their own versions via email - they've been so lovely to see!

#twelvedaysornaments on Instagram

I was so inspired throughout my process by Larissa's hashtag #twelvedaysornaments on Instagram - there are SO MANY beautiful versions there, I thought I'd share a few of my (many) favorites here:

Hope you enjoyed this feature, as I plan for the new year! Did you know about the history of the days of Christmas?

And just out of curiosity - do you have a favorite, out of all the ornaments I stitched this year? :)

Feeling Random Friday #2 with Salt Stitches

The first time I saw Emily's work, I was blown away! She uses every bit of the face of the hoop and fills it with intricate stitches and textures. She adds details like glass beads and semiprecious stones to add more depth. The abstract pieces are based on landscapes and waterways from her travels.

You can see Emily's work on her Salt_Stitches Instagram, and you can purchase it in her Salt Stitches Etsy shop.

Here are a couple of my favorites.

If you or someone you know is a fiber artist you'd like to see featured, please either comment on this post or drop me a line at amy [at] randomactsofamy [dot] [com].

Wonderful Wednesday 58: Bloom Threads

Wonderful Wednesday 58 - Bloom Threads, a Feeling Stitchy feature by floresita

I am so inspired by this wonderful piece by Jackie, or Bloom Threads, as she is known on Instagram. The right side of the piece was inspired by an 18th century print of the Women's March on Versailles. Jackie paired this with the more recent Women's March, and the two together speak so eloquently to me.

Jackie says of her piece:

"The long-and-short is this... Women revolutionaries have often been devalued. They have long been told that they are shrill, irrational, misguided, and petty when they are actually the very heart of the revolution. Keep pushing forward."

Jackie is auctioning her piece this week to benefit Moms Demand Action, an organization which advocates for common sense gun laws in the U.S. Jackie has also arranged a variety of pieces from other crafters and artists, each to support the organizations of their choice, be sure to stop by #deedsandactionsauction on Instagram and see all the other auction pieces as well.

Thank you Bloom Threads, you are inspiring!

Feeling Random Friday #1 with Embroidology

Embroidology, a Feeling Random Friday feature by Amy Byrne for Feeling Stitchy

Hello Stitchy Friends!

I know I've been gone for a while...I've had some great and not so great events happen in my life, and I needed to take some time to sort my life out. I am so lucky to have an Editor like Floresita who is understanding and supportive.

I was getting a bit burned out on Friday Instagram Finds, and wanted to try my hand at something new. I tossed around some ideas with Floresita and my husband, and it became clear that I wanted to expand from solely focusing on embroiderers and cross stitchers to ANY art/craft with a needle. I also wanted to honor the Feeling Stitchy and my blog's name, Random Acts of Amy, somehow into the title, and thus, Feeling Random Friday was born!

In Feeling Random Fridays, I'll focus on embroiderers, cross stitchers, quilters, sewers, knitters, crocheters (I know it's a hook, but needles are sometimes used.), tattooers, you name it - any art or craft that uses a needle. The world is big and varied, so why not try to see as much of it as we can?! If you come across an artist who uses a needle, tag #feelingrandomfriday for me so I can take a look!

Our first feature is @Embroidology! Steph is an ex-neuroscience student turned science embroidery artist. I follow her on Instagram, and love to see her science related works of art. The picture above is the anatomy of a flower, and some of her other pieces are closeups of plant cells, root vascular cells, and microglial cells. I recommend you check out her Instagram feed.

I will see you next week when I'll feature...another amazing needle artist!

Friday Instagram Finds No. 76 with Tracie Christine

Hello all! Floresita here, subbing in for Amy, with a look at the beautiful feed of TracieChristineArt. I've been fascinated by Tracie Christine's recent projects - a series of hoops with a lovely bright blue backing fabric.

I love the simplicity of her lines and the wonderful homey feel I get from looking in on these kitchen scenes. Something about them just reminds me of home. Her fiber art is gorgeous and certainly worth a follow.
