A new series of beautifully illustrated books are soon to grace your shelves. Do you recall the Penguin Threads Deluxe Classics that were published in 2011? The set features special embroidered book covers by Jillian Tamaki and Rachell Sumpter.

Next month Penguin will publish their latest craft inspired collection: Penguin by Hand which celebrates the work of six prominent, female authors of contemporary fiction. The stunning book cover designs are truly a feast for the eyes. The production includes an array of hand craft techniques: embroidery, paper art, pyrography and string art.
The six contributing artists are: Jenny Hart, Brenda Riddle, Emma Ruth Hughes, Genevieve Dionne, Dominique Falla and Helen Musselwhite.

To emphasise the tactile art work, the sumptuous covers have once again been sculpt embossed. The incredible detail in the embossing plate below illustrates how the intricate elements and fine textures of embroidery have been translated well to paper.
Such appealing covers call out to be handled, re-connecting readers to the tangible experience of thumbing a paper page, where the only concern is spilling coffee onto such a spectacular book cover. Whilst discovering the latest Penguin by Hand range, let’s remind ourselves of the three fantastic book covers that won a prize in the Feeling Stitchy ‘Covered in Stitches’ contest.

Friday Instagram Finds No. 6
I have some exciting news for you! Starting today, Friday Instagram Finds will be published EVERY Friday!! Woo hoo! I'll feature one embroidery or stitch-related artist each week. Tag your Instagram photos with #feelingstitchyig for a chance to be featured. Today I'm featuring...
@sarucabuca
Sarah Benea creates gorgeous hand embroidered pieces! Her lines of sign language and constellation mini hoop necklaces are clever and beautiful. The detail on these mini hoops is mind boggling! She's the kind of artist who, when you see her work, it makes you want to push yourself to go beyond what you think your limits are.
Here is her Sign Language Monogram line. Any stitcher worth her/his salt knows how difficult it can be to embroider hands (and eyes) and also make them look real. Well! Sarah has done that in spades, and has created a unique piece of jewelry, to boot.
And here is her Constellation line. The navy blue background is the perfect "night sky" backdrop to Sarah's precise lines and French knots. I'm a Libra, what's your sign?
Sarah also creates whimsical and timely pop culture art like this Miley Cyrus! Her attention to detail (wrist tattoo) and shading (check out her tongue) bring a strong visual appeal.
Sarah also thinks outside the hoop and fabric with pieces like the one below that she hand embroidered on a vintage map. Embroidering on paper can get tricky, and once again, Sarah's attention to detail takes her artwork to the next level.
I hope you've enjoyed this edition of Friday Instagram Finds (FIF) on Feeling Stitchy, which is now brought to you weekly! Please leave comments below to let me know what you thought. If you'd like to be considered for FIF, or if you find a great embroiderer or stitch-related needle worker who you think I should feature, be sure to tag their pictures with #feelingstitchyig, and I'll take a look!
While you're on Instagram, make sure you follow Feeling Stitchy! We're @feelingstitchyish. We'd love for you to stop by and say hello.
But wait, there's more! I discover this adorable Instagram feed called Penguin the Magpie, and I have to share it with you. From Penguin's IG bio: Rescued by Noah as a baby and raised by us. Free to fly but loves our home as much as we do. Is known to occasionally sneak in on wet nights. Female.
Dear Reader, I have cried - CRIED, a couple of times when Penguin hadn't been back to see the family for long periods of time. What happened to her? Did she trust the wrong human?! But then she always shows up, and I can breathe a sigh of relief. The love and trust she shows the family, and vice versa, is heartwarming. Take a look...
Hi, I'm Amy - I feature interesting embroidery and stitch-related photos I find on Instagram. I'm a hand embroiderer and maker.

More Embroidered Book Covers to look forward to...
Penguin has done it again! After the awesome Jillian Tamaki embroidered book cover designs for the the Penguin de Luxe Editions of Emma, Black Beauty and the Secret Garden (now all available!) there are three more 'Penguin Thread' titles to look forward to! Rachell Sumpter has stitched some fantastic cover designs for Wind in the Willows, The Wizard of Oz and Little Women. The designs are wonderful but equally important: embroidery gives these cover illustrations warmth, and really makes them come alive.
If you want to know a little bit more about the design process of the first three 'Penguin Threads' books check out this short interview with Penguin Art Director Paul Buckley and Jillian Tamaki.
This Monday our 'Covered in Stitches' contest comes to an end so if you are playing along please remember to post your photos in our Flickr Group in time. As you may recall one of the grand prizes is the full set of the first three 'Penguin Threads' books! If you are not submitting an embroidery, have a look in the group anyway. I"m so very impressed with all the submissions so far!

Book cover inspiration and a Contest update
Today I'm showing you some examples of embroideries I found on Flickr that were inspired by or based on book covers. These are not entries for the 'Covered in Stitches' Contest (and yes, there are already some entries!) but they certainly could be! 'Monster' was superbly stitched by Lauren on a tea towel.
'A Wrinkle in Time' is an embroidery made by Lynn. She used a cool book cover from the sixties as starting point for her piece.
A very different approach is this mixed media piece made by Moxiedoll77. She embroidered on the leather book cover of a book called 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter'.
I have great news for all the stitchers that are joining in the 'Covered in Stitches' contest. In addition to the wonderful collection of prizes we already had, we have an extra prize for the winning Book Cover! When Penguin Books learned about our Contest earlier this week, they kindly offered to send the winner the full set of the Penguin Classic editions with the Jillian Tamaki covers. Thank you Penguin Books!
Remember, if you have any questions about the contest, just want to say 'hello' to your fellow 'Covered in Stitches' stitchers or post a submission: visit the 'Covered in Stitches' Flickr group!
