My husband loved this first hoop. I had no idea what it meant until he saw it (Any Billy Madison fans out there?). I just love the Holly Hobbie-esqu fabrics. Friday Instagram Finds No. 8

Happy Friday Everyone! I hope you've had a great week, and will have any even better weekend. This week I'm going to introduce you to @threadthewick! I found Chels because she used #feelingstitchyig to make sure I saw her work. This week, instead of using the embed code from Instagram, I am going to screen cap the pictures from Instagram. Chels creates pretty embroidery and cross stitch creations. One of the things she does is blend pop culture phrases with classic-looking cross stitch, like this, "I regret nothing" piece. I love how the colors pop on the black Aida cloth.

As a mother, these are words that we all long to hear! Again, I love how she created this phrase with cross stitch.

If you've seen my IG account, you know that I have a thing for delicately embroidered flowers. I just love them! These embroidered flowers Chels created are so dainty and pretty, and her stitching is beautifully precise.

Artist Love: Interview with Moxiedoll

I'd like to introduce you all to an Etsy seller and artist I've been following on Flickr for awhile now - under the name Moxiedoll, Mandy creates collectible embroideries framed in hoops. There's something addictive about her uncomplicated style - a combination of fun fabrics, imaginative doodles, and hilarious quotes make each of her works uniquely wonderful. She was nice enough to agree to a brief interview - so let's learn a little bit more about Mandy!



How long have you been stitching?

I've been stitching for close to 10 years now. A friend and I discovered an underground craft club and decided we wanted to check it out. I purchased some Sublime Stitching patterns, taught myself to stitch and the rest is history!




What is your first crafting memory?

Well my first documented memory of crafting is "sewing" with my mom, although I'm not quite sure what my end creations came out looking like. ;) I think my actual real memory is creating those pot holders from loops on a loom. I remember feeling such a sense of satisfaction and pride after I would finish one because it was something I knew someone could USE and I made it.




Where in the world are you? Do you think your place in the world has an influence on the embroidery you create?

I live in Forest Park, IL within walking distance from the last stop on the Chicago El. I do think that living in a metropolitan area definitely provides me with a constant source of creative inspiration that I know I wouldn't get in a less urban area. But as much as I love the Windy City, I can't say for sure that Chicago itself has a specific influence on my work.






I love the variety of fabrics in your stitched pieces - do you have a process for selecting them?

I try to make sure I have a wide rainbow of colors available at any given time. I don't really have a real process per say for selecting - I just buy colors and textures that I think will work. As far as choosing which fabrics I'm going to use for each piece, I usually pick the design first and then that guides the fabric choice. Anchors Away is a good example of this. But when I find a fabric with a cool print on it, then oftentimes the repeat pattern or print guides the design. My Mr. Rogers piece is a perfect example of this.






Do you have an art background - if so (or if not), how do you think this has affected your work?

I don't have an art background - I have a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's in Library Science. It's hard to say if my work would look different if I had a different educational background. I'd like to think it wouldn't. I do wish I was a better drawer though. I envy stitchers like Jenny Hart and Wild Olive who can draw such fantastic patterns.








There’s such a fun mix of old and new, vintage, cinephile, and geekery in your work - where do you find your inspiration?

Basically I just stitch stuff I personally like. And I guess I'm personally kind of a nerdy hodge podge of old and new, with a passion for pop culture. My theory has always been if I like it, it's very likely someone else will too. Perhaps that sounds selfish, but I have a hard time creating pieces based on whatever is currently trendy. If I had to produce work based on some prescribed list of what's hot, I think I would quickly grow to hate my job.




What do you do when you’re not stitching?

Well like many people, I spend way too much time on the internet. I've become great at building Pinterest boards of projects/recipes/vacations I have to yet to actualize. ;) But I also absolutely love cooking, baking and playing hostess. And I am an interior design junkie, so I love styling my home and helping others style theirs. That's partly why I started my vintage Etsy store - so I could have a reason to buy cool vintage pieces and learn more about the history behind them. In 2010 I started curating an art and craft show with two friends of mine in Chicago, which has been a really challenging, yet rewarding experience as well.




Name one project of yours that you LOVE

This might quite possibly be my favorite piece I've ever stitched. I made this for a "Fathers and Daughters" themed art exhibit. It incorporates so many things/themes that are dear to me: maps, silhouettes, love, geography, remaining young at heart, long distance relationships and, of course, my dad.




5 movies you LOVE

Garden State, Run Lola Run, Heathers, Totoro, Amelie. That question was seriously the hardest one to answer, as I could list 50. ;)




What do you LOVE most about the online stitching community?

I love the vast amount of creative stitching talent that there is out there right now and how willing everyone is to share their creations with others. I'm in constant awe of stuff I see online and seeing other's work keeps me perpetually inspired and motivated to work harder.

No, nothing to do with washing your face or clothes. But embroidered portraits of some of the characters of English soap 'Eastenders'. Now, I must admit that, although I live in England, I don't think I have ever watched a single episode of this, very long-running, show.

However, I can definitely appreciate the cross-over between pop culture and stitching. Especially when the stitching is this good!

Talking to Totally Severe

Did you see the Milhouse embroidery on the blog recently? Otherwise go take a look! Here is some more from Sarah of Totally Severe. Although, I totally think she's should change the name to Totally Cool, because that is exactly what she is! And it goes to show that you don't need to know a lot of stitches (in fact she says she only knows one!) to do work that has a lot of impact. Check it you!

Who or what inspires you?
I am inspired by antique photographs, floral patterns, overly saturated colors, and lousy daytime television.

How long have you been stitching? What got you started?
I started doing embroideries in July 08, when it became increasingly difficult for me to find freelance design work. I found myself with a lot of free time, and I'm not the kind of person who is good at sitting still. I always have to be busy doing something productive, so for some reason I decided on embroidery. Lucky for me, it's a very affordable hobby.

Do you have a favourite stitch? Why?
I use the satin stitch because that's really the only stitch I know. I just improvise as I go along.

Tell us about your subject matter...
The more ridiculous things are, the better. I think there's something wonderfully strange about the mixture of modern pop culture and an old-fashioned medium like embroidery. If you had told me two years ago that in the future I'd be sewing images of Jerry Stiller and Dr. Phil, I probably wouldn't have believed you. I refuse to let embroidery be serious, so I like to incorporate humor and very bright colors.

What perceptions of embroidery do you encounter?
I think embroidery is still perceived as being kind of stuffy, but it's only stuffy if you want it to be. Mostly when I show people my works they're amazed that I possess the kind of patience needed to make them.

Why is embroidery worth spending time on?
I've been doing graphic designs for years, but there's always a disconnect between what I'm drawing on a screen and an actual tangible product. I like embroidery because it's a creative process and I get something to hang on my wall at the end of it.

Oh, too many to mention. Every time I look in through it it makes me want to try new techniques. I'm drawn mostly to redwork and portraits.

Manbroidery!

Hey people, sorry to have disappeared for a while. Life sorta got in the way. Y'all know what that's like, eh? ;-)

Well, a little while ago I stumbled upon the embroidery (manbroidery!) of one Mr. Xstitch (on Flickr) and he just ticks all the boxes for deserving being in the Feeling Stitchy spotlight: he's a dude, he embroiders, he makes his own patterns of cars, pop culture figures and graffiti (yeah, baby!) I had to know some more so I asked him a few questions. Thank you, Mr Xstitch!

Why did you start doing cross stitch?

It all began with a trip to Canada - I wanted something to do and found myself in a haberdashery shop. I bought a pattern of an art nouveau head, and found it surprisingly enjoyable to do. After I finished that piece I wanted something different to do, but found it hard to source patterns that really tickled my fancy. In the end I settled for the Kiss by Klimt from the Cross Stitch Collectables site. But it sparked off a desire in me to make patterns that I wanted to stitch.


Can you tell us about your subject matter?

I've always been a fan of graffiti and street art, but have never been brave enough or artistic enough to actually do any myself. However, within the pixellated world of cross stitch, things make more sense for me, and having spent some time researching different graffiti pieces I decided to turn some into patterns and have a go at stitching them. The only flaw in my plan is that each of my patterns is about twelve inches wide and takes several months to complete. So periodically I’ll do some smaller pieces – ironic samplers or blackwork – as a way of making things interesting.



What reactions do you get from other people? (being a dude embroidering and all)

People are kinda surprised that I do stitchery, especially as I’m six feet tall with a bald head and look like I should a doorman rather than an embroiderer. But I extol the virtues of needlecraft, how relaxing and contemplative it is, and before long they can understand where I’m coming from. I do like to take small samplers onto the train when I go to work sometimes, just to provoke reactions in people.

This whole “manbroidery” thing is part of the inspiration for my patterns – I want to make patterns with subjects that men can feel comfortable doing. From supercars to superheroes, I want to make cross stitch more palatable for men, so that they can appreciate it as a more relaxing alternative to Gears of War or Halo3. That’s my main aim, and I’m feeling confident!


Where do you find your inspiration?

I spend a lot of time wading through RSS feeds from graffiti and contemporary craft blogs. There’s so much brilliant stuff happening out there, it’s terrific to see. I’m really interested in the political aspect of crafts and how they empower people to fend for themselves – I feel inclined towards more political work as time passes. But there are so many inspirational artists out there, I am humbled. I’m just a pattern maker really, I feel guilty considering myself as anything resembling an artist. I’m just glad to be a part of the craft revolution.
